Let’s talk about accountability. Accountability is defined as the fact or condition of being responsible – meaning to take responsibility of something and taking ownership. It’s defined as a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone – for instance I am responsible for my children and am accountable for their actions in public and in the grocery store.
Another definition is that it is the opportunity or ability to act independently and make decisions without authorization. This might be my favorite definition of Responsibility and accountability and is the one I want to talk about today. To do that I need to break a golden rule of conversation and talk about Politics.
Nearly six-in-ten (58%) believe it is very important to improve the level of confidence Americans have in each other, while another 35% feel it somewhat important to find ways to restore trust.
This leads to longer meetings, bosses looking over your shoulder, cheating spouce, fights, firings, you name it. Trust is a huge problem in this country.
So how do we fix this?
We have to understand that we have to be able to act independently and make decisions without authorization. And if we can not do that, if we can not learn to do the right thing when no one is watching the problem is not with someone else – it is with ourselves.
